This warning recently appeared on Gumtree (Sydney, AU). David Halls, like other fraudsters, runs scams around the world:

There are people lying about apartments and asking for payment’s.

 

They say in the email’s that the man is a reverand of the church on a crusade in africa and

That the Wife and child live in America or New Jersey.

They have the keys and documents to the apartment with them.

 

If you see, or get a reply from any one of the emails below,

DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY DETAILS OR ANY MONEYS

 

You should CONTACT THE FEDERAL POLICE (000) and inform them as there is a case file on these people.

Jain Williams (williamsjain@gmail.com) and Joy Coker or CJL Coker (cokercjl@yahoo.com) were trolling for victims on Craigslist Paris today. They try to personalise their pitch by including the original housing wanted ad in their response. Here’s what these Nigeria-based scammers write:

I am sorry to add to the list of scammers on Paris Craigslist, but I am trying to find a flat to rent there for the next year and I almost sent money to one of the three scammers I encountered.  I knew the deals seemed too good to be true, but I was hoping I had just gotten lucky.  DO NOT BELIEVE THE WEST AFRICA SCAMS!!!  Also, in Paris, a flat of 30 sq. meters goes for like 900 Euros/month, so when you read about anything that’s like 70 sq. meters or more in size and goes for 450 to 600 Euros a month, that is a huge red flag.  I’ve also noticed these scammers use gmail addresses frequently and they’re all claiming to work on a mission of some sort in West Africa.  If the pictures of the apartment look like they are from a magazine, they are!  It’s ridiculous.

Mary doesn’t even make an effort to address the email due to the sheer volume of emails she sends out. **BEWARE**

SHE’S BACK: Notorious scammer Sandra Roland resurfaces on Craigslist

“Sandra Roland” is a regular scammer on Craigslist and expatriates.com who claims to be a “Medical Humanitarian Nurse” in Nigeria searching for an apartment in Paris. Apparently she can speak English fluently despite sending a very poorly written email (a telltale sign!!) out to the majority of people who advertise Paris apartments on Craigslist. LOOK OUT for this one – while she may not be the smartest scammer around she certainly pops up everywhere!

This is the email that’s doing the rounds:

This “medical humanitarian nurse” also goes by several other aliases, including Whitney Brainard,  Staci Martin and Alicia Smith, Jeni Walcot, Tracy Fields, Diane or Dianne Jackson, Linda Quach, Melanie Bunton and Christine Burke.

The way this scam works is that the fake tenant offers to send advance payment for the rent, etc. What they actually do is send a counterfeit check (or counterfeit cash) for an amount that is greater than what they owe (usually along with some long-winded excuse about why they’re sending a larger amount). They ask you to deposit the check and wire them back the difference. Or sometimes they send you the check as payment, you deposit it, and they then say they they changed their mind about renting and ask you to wire them a refund. When you deposit the fake check, you bank may not know or inform you for several weeks that the check was fake and then you are on the hook for the entire amount. i.e. you’ve wired the scammer your own money.

Pastor Carter Curtis  or Pastor Curtis Carter — either way, avoid this shameless scammer who’s been posting frequently on Craigslist Paris in recent days, targeting students and non-students alike with photos of luxurious modern apartments. The scammers exposed on this site are only a small sampling of the huge number that regularly work Craigslist and expatriates.com.  It’s literally impossible to keep up with all of them, as they post daily and change aliases constantly. A few seem to stick to the same names (laurie paucot, chelseabluessports, mary arteta, sandra roland come to mind) but new names come up everyday. Please learn to recognise their language and style, do your research and take steps to protect yourself. And no matter what, NEVER AGREE TO WIRE MONEY THROUGH WESTERN UNION. YOU’LL NEVER SEE THAT (BOGUS) APARTMENT AND YOUR CASH WILL BE GONE FOR GOOD!

Debby Cat (debbycat38@yahoo.com) runs an ad (see below) for an apartment that claims the building has a gym, parking, maid service and a garden, definitely not typical with Parisian apartment buildings, and certainly not for 700 euros a month. And 45 m2 rooms? Nice try. Note the ad was placed at 3:02 a.m. Euopean time. Her story is complicated: she’s supposedly a “dual citizen of Paris”, and just started a course in Italy yet she writes from IP address 82.128.19.124, located in Lagos, Nigeria. Of course, since she won’t be in town, she wants you to send funds via Western Union to her name and address in Paris, no doubt to an in-country accomplice in this international network of fraudsters.

Big Red Flag: request for payment by Western Union

Fake ads and fake landlords. Every day, scores of them appear on Craigslist Paris. Some are so slick they’re almost impossible to recognise. Others are so sloppy they have scam written all over them. These con artists are based mostly in Nigeria, the U.K. and the U.S. They use yahoo, live, hotmail and gmail addresses and frequently change their aliases. What they all have in common is that sooner or later you get a request to transfer funds via Western Union or some other wire service.
