Hi [name withheld],

Thanks for your mail, and It’s really nice to know that you have an interest in my room.

The flat has three room,One is for me,One is for rent and the last one is regarded as a visitor’s room.

The fact is that the room is still available, but you have to do this on time because there are people contacting about the room,However i am contacting you to see if we could have a deal, but it depend on your seriousness as regard having the room , because i have come across so many unserious people who only like wasting other peoples time and i hope you quite understand me and my worries, and if you are truly interested in renting the room you will have to book for it in advance, by transferring the Rent and the security deposit to Our family lawyer via Bank Transfer. However, before you can transfer the payment to my family lawyer in England, there are procedures which we have to follow,Our family lawyer will have to
prepare a tenancy Agreement Form which you will have to read and understand and if you eventually agree with the contents of the contract, you will have to print it out and sign it and come with a copy on your move-in date.

After our family lawyer might have prepare the Agreement Form, i will have to send a copy to you via attached file to your e-mail address and mail a copy to your postal address as well.
I will like to have the following information that we enable our
family lawyer prepare the tenant Agreement Form:

1. Your moving-in and moving-out date.
2. Your current home address.(The purpose of the address is to enable me send a copy of the Agreement form to you, which you will have to bring along on your move-in date)
3. A scanned copy of your id card.

I will be waiting to read from you soon.

Regards.

Laura
PS:I have attached the pictures of the apartment for your viewing. The security deposit is refundable on your move out date.

SCAM AVOIDED: a reminder to all

September 26, 2008

A Scam Watch reader writes:

“We DIDN’T get scammed, thanks to your site.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Paris and posted an ad for an apartment swap in Paris (we’re in Los Angeles) and were contacted by a seemingly nice man named Ronald Rushton (ronaldrushton58@yahoo.com), who’s email address is listed on your fantastic site as a known scammer.
Typical BS- he and his wife are in England and need someone to look after the place and perhaps show the apartment (in a fantastic, central, wealthy neighborhood) to potential long-term renters, and all they want is copies of our passports and a security deposit wired via MoneyGram.  No rent, just a deposit.  TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE- we immediately did a search for Paris apartment scams turned up this idiot.  We emailed him back, saying that he’s an asshole and karma comes around.
Thanks for the heads up, we’re going to find a legitimate rental agency and go from there.”

.

Thanks to this alert reader for writing, and a reminder to all: Never wire money to strangers and never send copies of your ID to any prospective “landlord.” Anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.

Craigslist a haven for crooks, say police and bloggers

September 16, 2008

Canwest News Service (Canada)
Published: Thursday, September 11, 2008

VANCOUVER – Craigslist, the Internet’s most popular classified ads board, is being bombarded by crooks, say police and a Vancouver woman who monitors the scams.

“I’ve been watching Craigslist for years, and right now, it’s just insane,” said Meg, whose blog – www.chicaneryconsscams.blogspot.com – highlights rental scams on Craigslist.

Meg, who didn’t want her last name used, said she gets 50 to 80 reports of crimes every day.

She estimates that 20 to 40 per cent of all Vancouver rental ads on Craigslist are bogus, coming from phoney landlords who collect deposits on suites they don’t own.

Last month Val Dennis was searching the Internet for a new place to live when she stumbled on the perfect deal: a nice house, in the right neighborhood at a great price.

Almost too perfect.

After talking with the landlord she wired a deposit to Nigeria and got one step closer to moving in. Unfortunately, she stumbled into the latest twist in the long history of Internet scams: a housing ad that looks legitimate but is just really a way to part people and their money.

Dennis is out $650 and still searching for a new home

Police bust apartment fraud scam

September 10, 2008

CBC News (Canada)

Last Updated: Friday, September 7, 2007 | 11:10 AM ET

A Toronto man has been charged with fraud after advertising an apartment for rent on Craigslist.org, an online network where people can buy and sell various products.

Police say the suspect rented an apartment, paying first and last month’s rent. He then advertised the same unit on the Craigslist site, posing as the landlord.

Police say the man allegedly rented it to three different tenants, collecting first month’s rent from each plus security deposits, and then skipped off with the money.

BIG RED FLAG: Request for payment via Western Union

September 3, 2008

The number of fake rental scams on Craigslist and other online classifieds continues to grow, with new aliases appearing daily. But while the names may change, the methods are always the same.

These thieves, mainly based in Nigeria, the U.K. and the U.S., are out to steal your money and your identity.

They use yahoo, ymail, rocketmail, fastermail, live, hotmail and gmail, and they also post ads under anonymous craigslist addresses. They frequently change their aliases.

They use photos stolen from other property advertisements or from home furnishing catalogues or hotel websites.

They use fake names, often stolen from Facebook profiles or networking sites. Often they assume the identities of previous victims.

What they all have in common is that sooner or later you get a request to transfer funds via Western Union, Moneygram or some other wire service.

NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, WIRE MONEY AT THE REQUEST OF ANY PROSPECTIVE “LANDLORD” VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM OR ANY OTHER WIRE SERVICE.  EVEN IF THEY TELL YOU TO WIRE THE FUNDS TO A FRIEND OR RELATIVE’S NAME “TO BE SAFE,” IT’S A TRAP!

NEVER SEND A SCAN OF YOUR PASSPORT OR OTHER ID. THESE THIEVES WILL USE YOUR IDENTITY TO SCAM OTHERS.

Cops warn of rent scam

September 2, 2008

Jackson Hole Daily ( Jackson Hole, Wyo.)
August 25, 2008

The Jackson Police Department is warning people of a new scam involving valley rental properties.

People from outside the country copy listings for rental properties that are available online and then relist them for much lower prices but with the caveat that prospective tenants send or wire money immediately to secure their spot, said police officer Tony Mathews.

Mark Henning, property manager for Jackson Hole Apartments, found one of his own listings, for a single-family home in Rafter J he was advertising for $3,500 a month, listed on Craig’s List for $900 a month.

“It was listed with my information but their e-mail, and they were trying to get people to send a $600 deposit to hold it,” he said.
