When looking for a new place to live, Casey Guthrie headed online to craigslist.com. He found an adorable house, not far from the beach, in Milford.

“I contacted the people and they informed me they were from Nigeria and they were missionaries,” Guthrie said.

Immediately wary, Guthrie sat back down at the computer at this New London house and went online again. This time he went to the Milford town website and did a property search.

Fraudster stings single mom on apartment scam

She was a single mom hoping for the best.

Instead, Sherry Lynn Rogers, 35, was not only scammed out of $1,000 days before Christmas, but robbed of her faith in the goodness humanity has to offer.

“I hate to say it, but before this happened, I believed there were good people out there — now I know there are fewer of them than ever.”

Rogers’ ordeal began early last December when she came across an advertisement for a fully-furnished apartment for rent on a popular classified website that has home pages for cities across Canada, including Belleville.

The pictures showed a simple, clean two-bedroom apartment which came “fully furnished for $800 per month which included heat, hydro, cable and all the appliances,” Rogers said, adding the address was on Bridge Street West.
