Yeah, I just found out that I’m the latest victim. Ferrari Stephany Jose totally scammed us out of several hundred Euros. Her fake story involved a dead father, a mother in London, and a lawyer in Spain. She was completely cordial and nice via email and had perfectly believable, nice photos of her flat. I can’t believe this happened, but it did.

I was just scammed out of $2,000 by Olivia Hilary. I wish I had checked this site first. Please let me know if there is any recourse for this. Should I contact the Paris authorities? I don’t know what to do.

These international fraudsters are aggressive and persistent. Here’s what one reader had to say about a scammer encountered on expatriates.com:

 

I initially contacted him thinking it was legit. I realized by the response that it was fraud. They post all over the world. they did just here inCanada in SEVERAL different cities as “Rev” (hahaha) Chicago Godwin… I strung him along for DAYS acting like I was interested.. in the end he had the nerve to call me SEVEN times from a Sudanese number and actually DEMAND I go to Western Union even though I told them I KNEW it was a scam and had contacted the police! Unbelievable!! I of course hung up and haven’t heard from them since.

Hi! I just got back from paris where I had rented a room in a bed and breakfast through Craig’s List. When I got to the address, the place was actually owned by a French couple. The police were familiar with this guy–Sean Kirkham–because apparently I was the third person that week with the same story AND he has stolen a fair amount of money from an adjacent bank. So…be careful! I’m attaching the ad below!

C’était une offre très alléchante et j’ai donc répondu en disant que j’étais très intéressé.

I have been the victim of fraud from an ad posted on expatriates.com and Craigslist. I have lost $2,500 and caution everyone to take care!!

It was a very elaborate scam – the passport that was emailed to me was real but stolen, the official documents were photoshopped, the signatures forged and the contract was extremely thorough (my solicitor even approved it).

I have been going through ads and flagging the scams – there are a LOT on here, please be careful!! Anyone that asks for Western Union or similar wire transfer is a scammer – DO NOT AGREE TO IT!! If, like in my case, you do transfer the money via Western Union, there is no hope of retrieving it. Western Union get a commission for all transactions, fraud or not, and they DO NOT HELP in any respect!!

Be sure to check the IP address…this will tell you which country the email is coming from. In your email program somewhere it will say “Show Full Header” or something similar. This will provide all details from the sender up the top of the email when you open it – find the IP address (it will look like this – 90.208.149.203 – and sits at the bottom of the header next to “Received by”) and do a search on http://whois.domaintools.com/. 

Also be SUSPICIOUS of emails from gmail!!! In gmail, the IP address of the person sending the message doesn’t come up in the header and therefore you are unable to track it. Other IP addresses do show up but they indicate where the email is routed to before being sent to you. Gmail comes up as California, but more often than not they originate in Nigeria.

BOTTOM LINE – Treat everyone as guilty until proven innocent, ask lots of questions and realise that these people have no shame – they will stop at nothing until they get your money!!

Date: 2008-06-09, 2:16PM CEST   Others have already pointed out that the name Debbie Philips is being used as part of a housing scam targeting people seeking housing in Paris. I’m writing this to add some more updated information, as I’ve been targeted by this same “person” recently (no damage done, thankfully, just information gained by querying the “woman”).                     

I’ll post the text of the emails we’ve received below, but first some basic details. For us, she used the address 5 rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, which may exist (there is an apartment at 6 rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau). The pictures show rooms with windows that I have never seen in Paris (others on CL have agreed). The woman claims that the apartment is on the 4th or 5th floor; however, there are trees visible out the window, and there are no trees or parks anywhere near the apartment’s supposed location–so no way one could see trees from it. Additionally, the offer is far too good to be true. A fully furnished and equipped 3-bedroom (not just 3-room) apartment in that neighborhood of Paris should go for around 3000 euro a month, I estimate–the 1000 euro/month asked for is either completely naive or a total scam. 

Other things also don’t add up–the overwhelming amount of too-personal information the woman gives, the strange “fact” that she has apparently spontaneously decided to rent the flat after rapidly leaving France for the US, but has conveniently left everything completely furnished and equipped, the fact that she’s trying to rent it from afar via CL rather than using one of the numerous rental management agencies that exist in Paris, and then the fact that she uses a very American name yet makes English mistakes that native speakers, even those who write poorly, don’t make. 

All this aside from the obvious, that this is a complete stranger using the mask of the Internet to solicit, from overseas, 1000 Euro for a flat that renters can’t visit or even verify the existence of. 

That said, here are the emails “she” has sent, so you all can judge for yourself. My suggestion: be very wary, use a bit of logic/deductive reasoning, and, as other people have said, don’t wire money to someone you don’t know, especially for something whose existence you cannot verify.

Good to read from you on your interest on my apartment, which i am leasing out for rent 

Presently the apartment is still very much available for rent.Just to give you a little low down about the apartment. I resided in the apartment with my only daughter melissa and my late husband whom i inherented the apartment from, before we relocated my country in United State. Due to my new job offer at the Valley Medical Center – Renton, Washington.And also i am about to get married to my fiance in less than three months from now.

These are some of the measurement of the apartment.Reception room 17′0″ 16′0″ ( 5.18m x 4.88m , Kitchen 13′0″ x 11′0″ ( 3.96m x 3.35m ), Bedroom 1 13′0″x 11′7″ ( 3.96m x 3.53m ), Bedroom 2 12′10″ x 10′5″ ( 3.91m x 3.18m ), Bedroom 3 9′8″ x 7′8″ ( 2.95m x 2.34m , Bathroom 6′10″ x 5′10″ ( 2.08m x 1.78m ), Guest WC 5′0″ x 2′10″ ( 1.52m x 0.86m .Facilities and electonics like satellite TV and internet connection, and a sony DVD player, air conditioning, alarm system. The kitchen is fully equipped with all necessary cooking utensils, a refrigerator-freezer, four-hob and oven, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. 

Also the keys to the apartment are right here with me. Which i can send to you after all necessary agreement has be accepted and signed into lease. Also i will like you to know that the rent charges is not really the issue , but your absolute maintenance of the apartment, because that is the only valuable property my late husband left behind, and it also took him so much time and money to put all those facilities in place, so i wouldn’t want an violation of my property if finally rented by you. 

The Apartment is situated at rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, fifth floor apt 5, 75001, Paris, France. Nestled in the 1st arrondissement a mere 200 metres from the Louvre Museum and a short walk away from the Palais Royal, via the historic covered shopping arcade Vero Dodat, and close to St Germain and the Notre Dame, crossing the authentic Place Dauphine. And also note that ultilities bills are not inclusive, As you will have to settle the bills personally at your convenient time. Which shouldn’t be a problem if we later reach an agreement.And presently for now, i have no outstanding bills. So you would be starting the lease with a clean slate 

The minimum lease term is three months, but a maximum of two year with a possibility of extension.

Regarding the inspection, there is no one there with the keys over there as i told you earlier, so i think you can only go and see the apartment if you don’t mind, if the location is suitable for you This is the complete address to the building 5 rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, fourth floor apt 5, 75001, Paris, France. And also the pictures of the inside are what i gave you. I do know your worries and how you feel at this point in time. As it wasn’t my fault, as i was suposse to lock up the apartement at the time i was leaving for the united state. 

And i never had any intension of renting it out. It was just my fiance who suggested i should lease the apartment, since i am always worried about the maintenance of the inside as there is no one presently there to monitor it. So finally my tenant can always keep it clean and send me feedbacks. 

Let me know what to you feel at this point, as there are other inquiries coming in. If we can start the screening exercies regarding references and personal information, if you are well comfortable with the renting arrangement. And hope you have a wonderful time.

I was being scammed by this same girl DEBBIE PHILIPS!!!! she trying to tell me to send the 1st month rent up front and she will send the lease and keys, I found this very odd!! and so i questioned her for visit apartment before send money, she just keep telling me to not owrry and to let her know when I send money, and she said to send to her personal assistance which is in NIGERIA!!! and from that, I totally suspected her but still give some rooms for misunderstanding,..and then I search google for the sentence she put for her apartment, and it came up this website!!..and the email she sent to me was EXACT same as the one above!…

    Wow! Actually, I almost fell into the same trap. The name was different, but it was the same apartment and almost exactly the same text. I talked to someone from a non-profit that deals with fraud and identity theft, and she said very simply to stay away from Craigslist when looking for an apartment. The scammer to non-scammer ration is just too darn high.

    Hi, I almost fell in this scam as well but thank God I found this website just on time. I got the ‘great’ email from Amandine Briseno with this story of her being widow and wanting someone to take real good care of her unit here in Sydney since she has moved to the ‘State’ (even her emails’ spelling sucks!) and with the story of her having the keys and being willing to post them as soon as the we came into a rental agreement. She suggested to have a look to the area where the building is because of course I was not going to be able to inspect the unit before renting it. Everything seems so exciting since the building is just one block away from this great and beautiful area, Darling Harbour!, so it is just unbelievable, but unfortunately the idea of being able to get such a great place for so little money (1500 AUD per month) is just appealing. Anyways, we went back and forth with emails, and I even called her! but something didn’t feel right and I am SO glad I googled her name and found out this website on time! I can imagine the type of nightmare I was going to go through since it is not only the money they take upfront but the information they request from you within the so-called Rental Application Form. So beware of any gumtree add not including a phone number and any add saying that the keys are not available and will be posted after the rent has been sent. Now that I think about it, it’s so obvious that this is just not right, but at the time it seems so great that you can get blinded by the opportunity. Hope this people get caught and no one else falls for this frauds!

The story really fell apart when I found an ad for apartment just next door to that of Mr. Brutus (mentioned above) with the same missionary story by Mr. and Mrs. Williams (willyman_steve@yahoo.com), which follows:

    I did go to the address to see if it was really the flat on the pictures but it wasn’t !!

    And now I just found this website confirming me what I was already thinking … thank god !

    So be carreful if you don’t want to loose money !!!

    I am in the middle of “negotiations” with the Rev Simon Spallinger, thought it was too good to be true, so I downloaded the freehold and leasehold deeds from the land registry in England. And guess what ….. they dont own the property. I am in the middle of contacting the fraud office in England. I have a lot of details and even phone numbers from him and his wife – now called Mary!! I will post everything I have once I get in touch with the Fraud office, that way you can read everything he sent to me. Can you believe I even spoke to him on the phone and he invited me to nigeria!!! I havent cut off contact with them yet on the off chance that the Fraud office can actually use it to stop this guy in some way. I will post more details soon. Thank god I googled him!

She asked me to send her a few passport photographs of myself and a form detailing everything about me! – National insurance number, previous address bank details etc, basically all the details required to steal my identitiy!!!!

She put the ad on Sydney gumtree, talking about a late husband and the lovely flat in Darling Harbour – too good to be true.     Sincerely speaking, i can understand your concern regarding the viewing. But unfortunately, i am so sorry. The inspection and meeting would definitely not be possible for now. Like i told you earlier, i am currently in the state, and also there is no one over there with the keys, so i would suggest, if you are still interested to go over and see the area and building. Just for you to access the location if it is suitable for you. As i do know your worries and how you feel at this point in time. And also understand, it wasn’t really my fault as i was suppose to lock up the flat at the time i was relocating for the united state. Which was why i sent you some photographs.

    And moreover, i never had any intension of renting it out. It was my fiance who recently advice i should lease out the flat. Just for someone to occupy the place, and also put off my worries regarding the maintenance. And also do send me feedbacks on the state of the flat.

    First you have to print out the attached application form and fill in the necessary details to the best of your knowledge, and pass it back to me via my email, so i could go through it. As i have to keep some files in case all this finally goes through. And also i would need you to attach One clear passport size photograph separately. Which will be placed on the lease tenancy agreement. And kindly let me know how long you intend to rent the flat, So i could estimate some amount of rent to be paid upfront.       Surprised that in this ad, those scamers actually posted out the actual address. Based on which, people can instantly check on the SIngapore Land Authority and know this is a fraud!!!!

      I think these scammers improved in my case and that’s why they tried to hide the address and did not give it to me until i threatened that i will look at other options…………..

My friend is called Gemma Levan who emailed a woman called Kamala Roberts in America about an apartment in OXFORD. My friend Gemma lives in Cardiff and is my best friend who have reported this fraudster to the police as this Kamala woman have been scamming u all using Gemma’s name and passport. Please dont think it is Gemma who have done this. Gemma is very upset about all this and decided to research the woman on the net today and phoned me early hours this morning very upset about this woman. Gemma nearly sent this lady alot of money.

      To everyone reading these posts, the name “Kamala Roberts” was in all likelihood stolen too. So the “real” Kamala Roberts is no more guilty than than the other victims whose names this scammer uses. Scammers steal names from innocent, gullible people who correspond with them or send scans of their ID (don’t ever do it!). They also steal names from Facebook or other websites where people have posted personal information. Bottom line, the scammers behind this and the thousands of other “419″ scams are most often male fraudsters working from internet cafés in Lagos, Nigeria (most often) or other countries in West Africa. Just check the originating IP address of any scam messages you receive and look it up.

I have been communicating with KAMALA ROBERTS who posted the SCAM described above about the widow and daughter moved to USA with an apt to rent in the selected country (in this case, Singapore), on craigslist.com. I asked if there was a power of attorney here who could show me the apartment and/or colleagues who I could contact, and while waiting for her reply, have googled her and found this website. It’s unfortunate that there are people like this taking advance of the trust and goodwill of others.

So far have had 4 replies – one of course from Laurie Paucott, the well known scammer, one from someone called Dagorne Marine at da_marine_85@yahoo.com – checked the IP address and its from Lagos not Paris. The other two are gmail addresses so IP address just shows up as California. Does anyone know how gmail addresses can be tracked to the original destination?

      Robin, your friend should definitely report this to police, although there’s not much the police in Paris can do since the person who stole her money is not in France but almost certainly in Nigeria or some other West African country. She should notify her local police, Western Union (if they were used), Yahoo, Craigslist, and any other party involved in the process. The headers of the emails exchanged with the scammer will contain information about their location.       Unfortunately, the only way to stop these scammers is for people to stop sending them money. The warnings on craigslist are there for a reason.

    We experienced exactly here in Singapore with this Patricia Sadler.
    The email content is the same except for the address.

    Luckily, before we send out the money, we did a title search which of course proved this is a fraud. And that is why they are reluctant to provide the actual address of the property because i guess in most developed markets, ownership information is public.

    I was shocked when i read here that these cheaters go so big, from Europe all the way to Asia.

    Hope our experience will alarm the expats in Singapore.

    I have also been communicating with Patricia Sadler regarding the apt here in Hong Kong. Signed the application, lease, etc., but refused to send cash until I saw the apt. She provided me a shipping number for the keys… but I got suspicious and searched. Would not have given her money without the keys of course, but at least now I’ve confirmed that it’s a scam. She wants the money sent to her fiance’s account, in a different name, but she even sent me a copy of her passport… must be stolen, or fake. Unfortunately I sent her a copy of mine as well. But at least she didn’t get my money.

    Her fiance’s name, btw, is supposedly Demetrius Dawson, so keep an eye out for that name as well.

    Anyway, guess I won’t get that mid-levels apt for a steal! ;)

    I am the Patricia Sadler whose name was used by this scammer. I sent the person calling themselves “Gemma Levin” a picture of myself and some other details before realising that the whole thing was clearly a massive scam.
    It was for a flat in Cambridge at 24 Cherry Hinton Road. She spun this whole story about a dead father and a job as an air hostess in Dallas, Texas.
    I cannot believe that these people are now using my identity to scam other people all over the world. I have been in touch with the police in the UK and in the US but nobody seems very interested.

      Krista, you should also report the scam to the website or email service provider used by the scammer, i.e. Craigslist, Yahoo, Gmail, etc. as well as the internet service provider used by the scammer (can by traced via the originating IP address that appears at the bottom of the full message headers).
      Send these parties any emails with the complete message headers showing the originating IP address.
      Bear in mind that the name “Patricia Sadler” is meaningless, as scammers use hundreds of fake or stolen names, and multiple scammers can operate behind a single fake ID. The “real” Patricia Sadler is an unfortunate victim.

    As i mentioned in an earlier post i placed an advert in craigslist for accommodation in new york and paris. Within hours I had received 4 replies from scammers within days this amount was nearer the 20 scammer reply mark. I’ve been looking around the net and this is not just happening on craigslist, this happens on numerous websites such expat forums, Gumtree and any property to let sites. One of the best ways to stop this is to check the IP address, details of which can be found in this article i wrote on the scammers.

    I truly feel sorry for people who are scammed by these low lifes. They not only rob people of money but also rob them of the ability to trust others. Money is king to these people everything else is secondary. They should always be reported to the authorities, but with the internet there is no reason why a list cannot be compiled of these scammers and placed on as many accommodation websites as possible to warn others.

    I have an apartment in Paris which I rent out and I have tried to make renters as comfortable as possible about the process. I too require a deposit by check or wire BUT its sent to my American bank account. I live in the US, BUT I have people with my key who have shown the apartment for me. I give my home, cell, fax, email. I’m a California corporation. I can be traced straight to my front door! I can only imagine how it feels to get to Paris for your dream vacation and find you have been cheated have no place to stay and now may have to spend money earmarked for shopping/dining on finding accomodations.

    Has anyone experienced they same disasters with nyhabitat.com? I am not part of this service but they rent in Paris and New York and I’m wondering how well they screen “owners”.

They are all coming with the same kind of story, that they are out of the country and that they are searching for someone who just stays in the apartment for the maintenance, money doesn’t really matter. Their ad is gone after they found people that are interested. So don’t do any business with these people! So for a better google search: Wilson Ban fraud. Kelly Mann fraud.

    The same person is scamming BRIGHTON and HOVE in south east England at the moment.

    They are relentless, but after you’ve seen and responded to one scam, they are easily recognised.

    One just listed the address as “East Sussex” which is a large county about 45 miles/70km wide. I got the same reply as listed above when asking where the apartment is.

    As noted by others, the grammatical standard of the English is appalling. Also, even when advertising in England, they use very American terminology (“stove” rather than “hob”, “closet” instead of “wardrobe/cupboard” etc. And talk about air conditioning which we simply do not have in 99+% of residential properties in the UK as there is just no need for it).
    Also the pictures of the interior of the houses just don’t match what flats in this country look like. They’re also far too luxurious for the extremely cheap rent being offered. Here’s the email reply I received today:

    Got scammed by Patricia Louise Sadler too. It’s always the same mail as above, then we exchanged photos anc copies of passport ID… I also had a phonecall (in which she had a suspicious accent.)
    Unfortunately, and despite all of these warnings, and despite the fact I had dealt with scammers before but had been able to spot the scam, I made the mistake of making a first payment for the mails and deposit (flat was such a bargain).

    Then she was supposed to send me the key through DHL but I had the most suspicious email ever:

    I then decided to google her (why, didn’t I think about this before, I don’t know…) and found this page.

    I nicely told her I didn’t want to pay these $900 for a lot of obvious reasons she seemed to have understood, but then “she” wrote back again explaining sending my money to Nigeria was the only way…

    This is when I decided to end “our contract” (we had both signed a lease agreement) and she told me she would refund me, as it is stated in the agreement… I don’t have much hope of getting my money back though.

    The ad was on Gumtree for a flat in BRIGHTON. Please look out.

    Did any of you intented a trial at any point, or did you, like me, get offered to be refunded?

    Obviously she’s using several identities she’s stealing from people, which makes her harder to catch.

      Of course this is a scam! As mentioned above the list, the names and email addresses listed are only A FEW of the scammers making the rounds. There are thousands and thousands more! The main thing is to recognize the red flags, and you’ve done that. Your friend should stop corresponding with this person immediately.

        It could be that you replied to a scam ad for an apartment and the scammer decided to use your name to scam other people. That’s how these thieves operate…. That’s why one should never, under any circumstances, send anyone a scan of their personal ID or passport. Or, it could be they stole your name and info from a Facebook or similar profile. Whenever you post personal details about yourself on the Internet, you become vulnerable to these kinds of crimes.

    Yes, I am also ”dealing” with him and everything sounds very utopic and amazing, he had even sent me a copy from his passport from new zeland, which can be very suspicious, ’cause he can’t even speek a decent english. And of course, the email were just the same as yours.

      I agree watch out for this person because I can he’s not genuine!

      Possibly there has been some email interception and someone has my details…having a copy of my passport is certainly worrying!

      If anyone can tell me where I can find this person please tell.

    Like many others, I’ve been stolen money from “fake” Patricia Sadler for a flat in Brighton, and my story is the same as many of yours. Exchange of passeport scans, money sent (600£) by Western Union, and I’ve figured out the scam thanks to this website, but too late. I think this name is not used anymore, as I discovered the scam on August 2009 (after three months of mails and even a phone call.)but another name must be used. My friend Anne-Sophie Roger, with whom I’ve been scammed, has already posted a comment here (for her identity has now been stolen). As a French citizen, I went to the police station but Police can’t do nothing at all unfortunately. I think this website is really precious, and the names and scams need to be written again and again for the search engins to find them. Plus, this is the only way for us to prevent someone to say “You’re a scammer give me my money back” in case our ID is stolen and used. My only fear now is to be prosecuted because of that. I’m very sorry to read the others stories, and I’m very sorry something like that exists.

    It really burns me up to see how many people have had their dream vacations ruined by scam artists. I have just given up my apartment in Paris and I want to make sure that these criminals do not latch on to my old apartment and start scamming people.

    If you see a rental for 4 rue lalande in Paris, PLEASE verify at sbb@sbbglobaltravel.com. As of October 31st, this apartment has been sold and NO RENTALS are being accepted.

    I’m saddened by the lack of character so many have demonstrated at the cost of others happiness. I want to make sure that my old address is NEVER used. Feel free to email me at the above email address IF someone tries to rent you 4 Rue Lalande in Paris. The new owners may one day want to do so, but I know them and I will be able to tell you right away that it is a scam before you send money.

    Deal only with those who have bank accounts. No western union. The scammers don’t have bank accounts and banks keep a great deal of personal information.

    We got the same email from Simon Puffett that someone posted above. And WE FELL FOR IT! Albeit with huge skepticism, which just makes it that much worse. But we googled his name and found nothing about scams.
    We should have googled “Simon Puffett scam” as I did this time, when I finally found this blog.

    I found an advert on Cambridge Gumtree for: “Amazing 2 Bedroom Flat Now Available in Cambridge” and responded to the advert to recieve a reply much the same as everyone else! Just by Googling the phone number which has remained the same I found this article. The email recieved is:
