He says he’s in West Africa but his email headers show he’s actually writing from IP address 91.186.10.10 in the U.K. Below is one version of his Craigslist ad followed by his response.

Now he’s popping up in California. How does he actually shake money out of people though? His English was so bad and story so implausible, it was obvious the guy’s a fraud.
Popping up in Denver now too. My wife found a posting that seemed too good to be true and I’m glad I looked into this and found great sites like this one to help us root out the scam. Best to trust your instincts on this stuff. If you can’t deal face to face then you shouldn’t do any sort of business.

It may surprise you to know that this scammer is probably writing to you from an Internet Cafe in Lagos, Nigeria.
The scammer wanted you to send him money for a deposit or to prove that you have genuine interest in the property. He would have asked you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union).
Western Union Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected, especially when it is collected from West Africa.
These scammers post dozens on fake advertisements every day of the week using different e-mail address each time and hundreds of people are replying to each one.

I have a little story…one and half years ago I “sold” a palm trio cell phone on kijiji for my son…I was soooooooooooo stupid. I mailed it to somewhere in Nigeria and was to collect my money from some on-line check place…well I sent the phone and obviously never received the money…lesson learned. Today my daughter and I are looking for a place to live in Lloydminster, Ab and the too good to be true house is for rent. There was a realtors stamp at the bottom of the photo as the kijiji add could only be contacted via email…I suggested my daughter call the realtor because a deal this sweet would not be around long. The person my daughter spoke with seemed to be the owner and she indicated that the house had never been for rent. We were sad but moved on…my daughter called me this morning very excited about an email she had received…sound familiar? She forwarded me the email and my warning bells and there were so many went off instantly…interesting the last name was the same as the palm trio disaster and the same poor grammar. My daughter called and spoke to the owner, who was caught completely unaware and she will is contacting the police…we await for an answer from this shyster also…my question is can the authorities ever catch these criminals?

The ad was on Brighton Gumtree – how has this person still getting away with this after all these years? Has he ever actually got any money out of anyone I wonder? Can’t believe the audacity!

He is now caling himself Pastor Daniel… A contact number has also been left of +234808194381… Guessing this is also linked up to a phone scam too!!! May i just say many thanks to the original poster of this article and may ‘god bless you’ haha

Why didn’t you flag the Craigslist listing? I’ve already flagged the $800 1BR 1BA offer. In the future, don’t just walk away from it, flag it and report them. On top of every Craigslist listing is a scam disclaimer. Click on More Info and follow the links to compile a report so he doesn’t victimize more people.

Regarding the viewing of the apartment. You can’t view the inside as i told you earlier because the keys and documents are here with us.You can only drive by and view it from outside. So if you are comfortable with that, you can get back to me.I know how you feel, at this point in time.. As it wasn’t my fault, as i was suppose to lock up the apartment at the very time i was leaving for my missionary trip down here, and i never had any intention of renting it out. It was just my wife who said it will be wise to lease the apartment, since i am always worried about the maintenance of the inside. So the tenant can always keep it clean and send me update pics. Then as soon as the keys get to you, i will give you some time to settled down, so you can send the next month payment. And please let me know what you feel as soon as possible, so i wouldn’t disappoint you, as there are also responses coming in regarding the
apartment. And please note that is not all about sending the rent deposit or monthly rent that matters in this relationship and agreement, but your absolute maintenance and promise to keep my apartment safe and clean. And also i will need you to often send me some update pics of the apartment from time to time at your own convenient time. As i am counting on you. I saw an advert exactly like this on gumtree for an apartment in Guildford, and fell right for it, as it was from his ‘wife’.. I filled out a few of the details such as my name, mobile number, email address and job title but not my address… I’m so scared now that I will be scammed. Can anyone advise me on what I should do? The kitchen is fully equipped with all necessary cooking utensils, refrigerator-freezer, four-hob and oven, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine.
Also the keys to the flat are right here with me, and the document. Which i can send to you after all necessary agreement has be accomplished.
Also i will like you to know that the rent charges is not really the issue , but your absolute maintenance of the apartment , because that is the only valuable property. So i wouldn’t want an violation of my property if finally rented by you. I will like you to treat the apartment as your own okay.
