Have wasted a day (but thankfully no money) talking to scammers from Craigslist in my search to find a flat in Paris.
You may want to add these guys to your list. The ones that weren’t smart enough to use the untraceable gmail, I all traced back to Nigeria.
The majority offered too good to be true prices on flats, stated they were working abroad on contract work (China and London) and would send the key to me in the post or claimed to be religious people.
Many also specified that tragedies had taken place in their life – the flat belonged to his/her deceased parents etc.
ALL 100% con artists. I hope this message helps someone, perhaps doing a search for a name or email address.

I just placed a post looking for a place in amsterdam and the strategy consist in asking always “if you are really interested…” and then they start to ask for personal information about what you do and so on nothing suspicious in the beginning. But they try to delay their answer in order to gain interestand attention from the victim (it in response to my post at craiglist amsterdam looking for a flat).

The thing that gives it away is why are they telling me how old they are and where they are from. Not to be rude, but I really don’t care when renting a place for a short time period. Plus, they have horrible grammar and do not seem to pay attention to my questions. See examples below:

they said they had a house to rent by me. all i had to do was send them the money. never did my bofriend said not to glad he did. they were supposedly in nigeria on a mission trip

She is claiming to be in the UK with her husband and has sent me pictures of her apartment.
This is a copy of the first email she sent:

I never sent this person an email in the first place and she claims to have found me from Share-Accommodation.net.
I havent sent them any money and do not plan to.

However the rent again per month is 400 euro + utilities of 50 euro = 450 euro is to be paid just once at the beginning of every month so you do not have to pay any more fee and a security deposit 650 euro which is refundable at the end of your stay in the room. Total amount to pay =1100 euro.
But i spoke with my mother about your situation and she has said the least/minimum she could go for the monthly rent is 350 and security deposit is 400. So the total to pay for a start would be 750 euro. Tell me if this is okay and cool for you.

Do not trust Kelvin Rodger. This person told me the exact address of the house that I wanted to rent. Gave me fake pictures and told me to fill out the rental application with very personal information I was alittle sceptical so I googled the organization that they were so called “volenteering” for. We always ask for photos, sometimes the photos don’t look like a german apartment, sometimes they say they have no photos, or they use photos from other peoples ads. We always ask to look at the apartment first or if we can have someone look on our behalf (bluff them). You will soon learn if they are genuine or not.

- Requested to fill out form (agency not registered). Woman calls herself Kate Hagi.
- Asked to provide deposit of 600 euro’s in advance. First paypal is ok; asked to transfer to person: shawannamoore@aol.com. Then we get e-mail mentioning that accountant of Kate has alerted her that paypal has been hacked, and then we get request to wire via Western Union.
- The same apartment is for rent for 680 per night via housing website for expatriates. Quite a difference.
- We get a phone number of Kate, that is picked up by a gentleman that does not speak english well, aparently her assistant (Nigerian???)
Do you know how to check IP addresses? When you have the email open click on View on the top tool bar, then options. Then look for the last “received from” in square brackets This will be the IP address. Then copy and look it up on this site http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip Then you will be able to tell if it is from Nigeria….
Very interesting reading, I can add to this as I am currently looking for a flat in Paris and have managed in one week to get 3 scams for flats. Luckily I read this board and saw the suggestion about the email header. FYI, emailtrackpro is excellent for this and easy to use…they’re offering a 15 day trial right now too!
Watch out for Alberto Molly, Sorrento Aurelio and Nathan Hugo! Seems Italian names are the latest big thing and all of them are ‘currently’ based in the UK for study and provided UK phone numbers. I even managed to speak to one of them so beware….I traced him back to Algeria and the others to Morocco and Nigeria.
