A reputable agency will simply go with whoever sends the deposit first, they will not have to pressure you.

Hey,
I just had something similar to Deanna. Some person Anna Peter from apparently the UK put some advertisement of a drumset on a Dutch forum (www.marktplaats.nl). This was a ‘too good to be true’ offer, so I sent some emails and after I asked for a phone number to talk things over things got quiet. I sent another email and it was unreachable (annpter@gmail.com). Mail bounced back; it appeared that Gmail blocked or deleted the address.
It also had a very strange phone number (040-2449171, located in Eindhoven for the Dutch people) which appears to be a fax number or computer attached to it. I get a bunch of beeps and static from that number.
Eitherway, I’m glad I did not buy into this crap. I hope this prevents other people to not get involved into this kind of scamming.

I received an house sitting offer for a Paris apt. with only a security deposit for 1 month. I cannot find the owners in the Paris white pages who say they are in the U.K. for medical care. I have sent no money and they are willing to send keys to a friend who can look at the apartment in a beautiful area on the edge of the Marais. They say the apartment was trashed when they tried renting and so they just want a caretaker. What can I do to vet them. We talked once over the phone and they asked good questions of me. Hi thanks for this site. I was getting suspicious with this “Mark Hart” guy under the address of xnephii@yahoo.com which I found on this list using Google. He said he was from London but his spelling was terrible. In the end he did say “I’m on business but just make the deposit and I’ll send you the keys.” I was never about to send the deposit before seeing the inside obviously, but it’s good to get confirmation from this site that he is in fact a fraud. I hate these people.

“Justin Fenton” is another name being used by a scammer, this time in Chicago. Its probably just a fake name or the name of some poor sot who’s being impersonated. Guy put up an add on craigslist for an apartment that sounded way too good to be true, said he was in the UK and would take payment up front (3 months!) over Google Checkout, etc. etc. all the usual bullshit one reads about. He was asking for a lot of money, and he even provided a scanned drivers license to bump up credibility. He also said he went to Harvard and also provided an image of his “diploma.”

Ella Mick is the name of the person who has scammed me, aka Tish Heavens. She/he claims to be a disabled person, with husband Josh studying in Bristol, bad experiences with rental agencies and tenants looking for tenant for her apartment at 61 rue Rambuteau. Moneygrams to be sent to 249 Blackfriars Road, London. I sent her a deposit, she asked for more. I received an email Ella signed contract but could not get something signed from her in the mail so very soon realized she was up to no good. Beware.

The real Mr. Gus Balague seems to be indeed a person working in interior design living in London, and his name seems to be utilized by this scammer. The scammer is not very clever, but could be harmful to many. Thank you for reporting scammers on your site.

Then I thought it seemed like way to good a deal compared to others. (300euro for 15 days in the 1eme) I googled his name & came across this fabulous website! Now I know more than half the people that messaged me are frauds!

Yep my friends and I were also looking for an apartment in Berlin and we advertised on Craigslist, we actually got the generic email as written above by George. He gave the email address: gusbalague@ymail.com. I, myself couldn’t believe the offer and I think he sensed my skepticism so he reassured me by sending me the names of references…here is his reply email:

I’m so sorry you might not be available to view the apartment prior to your move in as my contact..a friend in Berlin…is present out of the country. He is in istanbul for business and he will be there for a while.

There are a several scammers using poor Gus Balague’s name and passport, they must be passing it amongst themselves. We almost got taken and seeing the people here as well as on other websites for fraud who have had similar experiences really doesn’t help, it makes me feel helpless because I don’t see how the scammers can be stopped. However, the more places one posts the name, email address, etc. of the scammer, the more the name will show up in searches, so if you have the time, please do so.

I’ve dealt with several CL scammers recently, both in trying to sublet my place and trying to rent an apartment in Berlin. It’s frustrating, but I’ve learned a few things. First, always do research: Google any names, odd strings of words, anything that might lead you to a site like this, where scammers are discussed. Also, never rent from someone who isn’t in town. I know it limits the range of possibilities, but it’s worth it. Third, if you can get a friend to check it out, from the inside, do so. Even if you can’t, ask the rentee if you can have someone check out the place before you sign anything. If they hem and haw, chances are it’s a scam.

He seems to have stolen or is using the identity of someone as he sent me a CV that matched a CV on Linked in.
The apartment he told me about seemed too good to be true and there was a discrepency in some of the pictures.
I have sinced asked him for photo id and other photos and now he has disapeared.

I too was almost a victim of Gus Balague AKA Nathaniel Tyan Burns and now AKA Edwin Bekeens@e.bkeens@ymail.com. Only this was a romance scam.Told me his wife died in his arms, mom was sick needing brain surgery. He tried to get money from me to help pay for his “moms medication” then tried to get me to open up a bank account in my name so he could do “business” in the USA. “”Edwin Bekeens” claims to have been a Metro police officer and his best friend “Tom” is still on the force. HIs also claims to live in London with the phone number 011447024053762. This is a sick man. This man sent a copy of a passport, several pictures of the same person at different ages. He was suppossedly a computer software engineer. So apparently he has a new identity now so beware!!!!

I had a bad feeling when I got the first answer of one of the Craigslist fake landowners: language changed/worsened, pictures were too good to be true, pictures didn’t match the description, money transfer before contract and so on. Meanwhile I realised that my “landowner” just turned two years younger. Loooool! So I did some research on the web and came accross this website. You make Internet a safer place! Thanks!
Here some rules (applying for my case in particular):
- cross-check all information (some details might suddenly change)
- check the language (does it change?)
- contract ALWAYS before or at the same time as any kind of money transfer
- get a visit, don’t trust the pics (in my case: never answered my visit request)
- use our brain and go with your guts!

Another scammer: Francisco Picón, he has two emails (at least): 9icefranso@gmail.com and f.picon@yahoo.com, he gave also his telephone, but I never called him, don’t know if it works: +447024097889
He is away in London, and that’s why he can’t meet with me to show me the flat in Geneva that I wanted to rent, he sent me some photos, that seem pictures made with photoshop! He said and repeated in each email:”1 month rent and deposit has to be paid as soon as possible to keep the flat locked for yourself”, and the last one: “So the plan is that you have to pay the deposit and 1 month rent now to me here in London via western union so that you can have the room for yourself upon arrival later in 15th October cos other people also wants the place so after this i shall mail you the keys via DHL so that you can have access into the flat when you arrive in October and more i shall issue you a receipt of payment to acknowledge you that you have booked for the flat okay?But before this we shall sign the rental agreement to agree on terms of the flat okay? So get back to me with these details to prepare the rental agreement. Glad to read from you. I really appreciate your interest in my apartment… My full name is JANE LOUISE MILLAR, I’m from London (United Kingdom), i travel a lot due to the nature of my job. I work as a representative of my company, i work with a fabric company based in U.K., i was recently transferred to Singapore to gain a market for my Company.
In order to widen our market, i was saddled to bring our product close to people of Singapore, i was also given the job of handling the market.
However, I’m presently in London, i will be back to Singapore by 28th January, 2010.This is the reason I want to rent out two rooms out of my apartment, because I would still come down to Singapore to continue my job. I know quite well that we’ll really enjoy each others company sharing the flat. I can reduce the rent for you to $350 per month with all bills included as you can promise me that you are ready to keep the apartment clean and tidy.
I make a deposit of my spare keys at the DHL OFFICE. So that anyone who is really interested should collect the keys and move in after making payment, since I can’t entrust anyone with my apartment keys.I would make available a CONTRACT LEASE form for you to sign as soon as possible.
