Sid: I would recommend that you not send any money at all if you are not 100% certain that the offer is legit. Demand a recent mortgage-payment receipt or a copy of the landlord’s gas or electric bill showing the person’s name and the address of the apartment you are renting. If they say they can’t do it, or if the paperwork looks monkeyed with, or anything else is at ALL suspicious, don’t EVER send money. (And a too-cheap apartment in a good neighborhood, or a too-low deposit request is reason enough to assume the offer is a fraud.) There are plenty of legitimate and reliable services out there for finding Paris apartment rentals.

No I did not. Still looking for a apartment to rent. It all seemed to good to be true, and after reading some of the comments further up in this list I thought it was safer not to rent it. I haven’t heard of anybody being scammed by him, but my gut tells me something is WRONG. The apartment I wanted to rent was to big and to beautiful to be rented for that price..

It’s a complete scam. The apartment is nonexistent, and this person is using an ID he got from me when trying to scam me previously. (He didn’t get my money, but he got a copy of my passport and French titre de séjour.)
The way it works is he asks for a copy of an apartment seeker’s ID, identifying himself using a false ID, and then uses the new apartment-seeker’s ID for future scam attempts.
There is NO apartment at 28 rue de Sévigne, and the person you are communicating with you is NOT Joel Blum. Do NOT send money, and do NOT send a copy of your ID. He will only be trying to scam others in the future using YOUR ID.
Just got an email from a Joel Blum (same email address as above) saying “I saw your apartment advert and am interested in renting it. I will like to know the modalities for renting it like the duration, total cost, and any other condition.” As my ad specified ALL of this at length, and as his mail is obviously not specifically written as a reply to my ad, it is clear he didn’t read the ad (moreover in a later message he indicated dates and durations which were incompatible with my ad). I suspect a scam, or at least a spam.
More info following my previous comment: the UK phone number that this Joel Blum provided in his email is mentioned in a thread “George Moretti Nigerian Scammer” about one “Kelly Andrea” (see http://www.wordtravels.com/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=6135 the entry containing a UK phone number, starting with +44).
Additionally, the DNS indicates that the domain “honeywellgroup.co.uk” from which his email comes is registered to one “Joel Blum” in Oxford (see http://coolwhois.com/d/honeywellgroup.co.uk), and not in Aberdeen as he claims. The real Honeywell Corporation’s web site is http://www.honeywell.com, without the “group”.
So this “Joel Blum” and the email address Mimi suggested adding are indeed scams.
Final comment (of 3). I think the modus operandi of this scammer is as follows:
- He looks up at ads proposing rentals in Paris.
- He contacts all the owners saying he is interested to rent their place, but only in order to get some plausible information about the places (including the address).
- He puts elsewhere (on other web sites) ads about the same place with a ridiculously low price, so as to attract interested renters.
- He asks them to wire him the money after having provided them with the (real) address of the place (of which he is not the owner).
Oops apparently comment 2 got lost. Here is what I found about this Joel Blum.
1. The phone number he provided in his email to me is listed in a post in a thread about scammers here: http://www.wordtravels.com/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=6135&page=1#Comment_27222
2. The email address he provides, which Mimi listed (blumjoel@honeywellgroup.co.uk) is NOT that of the Honeywell Corporation where he claims to work in Aberdeen (it would be honeywell.com, without the “group” and not with “co.uk”). As the DNS shows, “honeywellgroup.co.uk” is a personal web site registered to the name of one Joel Blum (it can be a fake name) in Oxford, UK (see http://coolwhois.com/d/honeywellgroup.co.uk). His emails to me were indeed sent from that area.

Thank goodness for the staff at Western Union, who noted that renting from a Brit but sending the money to his financial advisor “Alexander Class” in the USA sounded a bit sketchy! Look up “alexander class fraud” and you’ll see how close I came to throwing money into the wind!
Moral: DO NOT send money overseas as a downpayment if you have not seen the place with your own two eyes, or through those of someone you trust (pictures of the flat do not count). Either have someone you know drop the money off, or ask them to pay in full when you get there. If they put up a fuss, consider running in the other direction!

Athenais (and others): when you see an interesting ad about a place, look up the web with some words taken out of that ad, to see whether the same ad appears elsewhere, with the same info. And check the context (the web site, how reliable it appears, what type of info it requires of people using it).
I recently saw on Craiglist’s rooms for rent section an ad for an apparently excellent rental – description, photos, location… – with a ridiculously low price (I live in that neighborhood). I looked up for similar ads, and found an IDENTICAL one (text, photos) on a legit real estate site (which requires serious registration for putting up ads, not like CL), with the market price, much higher than the one on CL. I now suspect the one on CL is put by a scammer, and anyone who clinches a deal with him will find by arriving at that place that the room is taken by someone else, will have lost his advance payment, and his identification will be used in other scams.
Out of curiosity, I looked up “38 rue de sévigné” and found this ad: http://www.parisfurnishedapartments.com/Accommodations/38sevigne/38sevigne.html for 990 Euros rather than 860 this Joel Blum quoted to you, and smaller than “his”. A trucated version (1 photo, 2 paragraphs, no cost, no other info) appears on another web site, quite odd.

I wrote back and called him on it. I said let me guess, your mother is sick and in the hospital, and you need to ship your car right away, and that your new employer was going to send first and last months check.
I said you Nigerians are scum… His reply was “Nigeria? I’m sick and tired of those guys getting all the glory”.
These scammers will send you a fake money order for first and last months rent, then send you about $2500 extra claiming his new employer sent you the money by mistake and he needs the extra money wired to him right away so he can pay the shipper. They try to get you to do this prior to the money order clearing so that your out the $2500 bucks.
Anyone should NEVER send money to anyone they don’t know.
Chances are, if someone from out of country is looking for a place, it’s most likely not ligit. Just ignore the email or try and report the email address to the service provider.

Three new scams in today’s Paris Craigslist “rooms and shares” section. The text, in each (different) case, is neutral, has no details on the space (size of room and its furniture), on the flat (size, housemates, floor), on the location in the city, and asks to write to the “owner” to get more info.
When googling a couple of sentences from each ad, each shows up as having been put in identical form, word for word (and typo mistakes for typo mistakes) for rooms in various cities in Europe and the world (Brussels, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Tel Aviv, etc.).
My advice would be: when interested in an ad, look for it elsewhere too.
Has anyone heard of Tom Frederick Jones? His e-mails are titled Eric Dave. He put an ad on CL Paris for 14 rue des jardins St Paul in Paris that looks too good to be true. Does anyone know of a reliable apt rental site in Paris?
I replied to one of the scams I had identified to see how it works. Here is the reply below. Note that:
1. The reply is from one “Laura Arena”, about a flat purportedly situated on 11 Rue Suger. It may well be a real rental provided (in another ad, which they “stole”) by a real owner.
2. There are spaces around all the specific information (name of owner, address, cost, etc.). The same text, with different “values” there, has appeared elsewhere. It is obvious the scammer has a computer program which fills in the “parameters” according to the city/target of the scam.
3. The mail has been sent (as seen in its header) from a wireless network in Douala (Cameroon)…
Recommendation: beware even of such “personalized” responses, which, on their face value, look real. Check where it really comes from, and NEVER wire funds…

I suspected a scam because there are two email adresses associated with the email one is elsafontanile@yahoo.com (different spelling?) and the other is trevon.carter@yahoo.com. Also the english used is weird.
Finally, I don’t think it was a reply to my post (on the french website e-colocation) becauseI wrote it all in French.
The pictures attached to the email looked like they come from a catalog.

Any UK number of the form +4470… is likely NOT to be in the UK (it is a call-forwarding number than anyone in the world can get without being in the UK).
This, in and of itself, is reason enough to suspect a spam.

I came across these scammers while advertise that I was renting out a room. The method matches the Nigerian Check Fraud scheme.
It started out by asking if the room being rented out was available. My response was that it is available and me asking for some personal information. They go on to respond with some story of being over seas and wanting to come to the US to go to college to finish up a master’s degree in microbiology. And their father would pay for rent and other expense. Read email:

What really tipped me off was that I recieved a very similar email from a totally different person (Anita). Some minor differences, like the birth location and where the mother is. Automatically I start to notice grammatical errors and whatnot. I was foolish enough to even consider this as reliable information, so I continued with this. Eventually I got an email from the “dad”:

He poses as an agent for an owner, takes the deposit, fills out the bogus contract and that is the last you will see of him. Be away. You male, late 20s to early 30′s. Always wears a baseball cap, quite the swooner.

Anyone heard of a richard don? i replied to his craigslist ad for a rental house and its much lower/mo than other sites listed. And he didnt exactly answer my questions. but he kept talkin about trust (ironically) and pets r allowed there. however, the other sites say no pets. im almost positive this is a scam. but if anyone has any info please let me know
you have to go see what you’re buying/renting. then with the persons name who owns the rental, take another 30 minutes and do some investigating. I know of two different people who rented a house in forclosure and had no idea til the sheriff came a calling. Actually one person did get a notice in the mail addressed to a person they never heard of and opened it and just thought it was some mistake but realized it wasn’t until the sheriff was knocking on the door. Sad thing was my friend was on his way out of town to catch up with his family heading up to tahoe for two weeks. If he had left with his family he would have returned to a house locked down with notices to not enter posted on doors. My friend spent that whole day getting a moving truck and taking everything his family had to storage and telling his family to come back – he needed to try to get some money back from the vacation rental to pay for this sudden huge expense. he didn’t get his money back and ended up living in his friends RV with his wife and two kids for 6 months. they now live in a run down apt in oxnard. But at least it’s a roof over their heads. A scam like that can set you back in so many ways you can’t imagine unless it actually happens to you. And the cops don’t help you out either. They just run you off the street if you are homeless with no place to park your car for the night. you can run names on “spokeo” and check phone numbers through them too. theres a few other sites too that will give you info. you will have to pay a slight fee for info but it’s worth it. On “Zillow” you can put in an address and a name of the owner will come up 9 out of ten times. then you can take that name and run it through spokeo. I always get license plates and run cars in drive way. Many times Ive caught people saying they someone they are not. Whatever they trying to hide-it makes me do business elsewhere.

Reported it to my bank, they have the actual check (I kept a copy & the Fedex envelope it came in). Even reported it to the FBI, twice!. That was a month ago. Guess what, just got another one of the scam email:

-I called the rental property to make sure that the “person” actually lived there and the number provided for the property was linked to another person in Florida who knew nothing about the listing that was put up.
-he emailed the contract which did not have information about the property, no property address, no information about the person renting the property, or contact information on the contract either.

It’s a 2 person apartment and it’s really a nice place and the neighbourhood is really super nice.

Someone replied by email in “text-talk” (i.e. where r u) English nearly immediately, asking for my telephone number to talk, despite the fact that I wrote an extensive email in highly proficient French. Signed email “bob” even though a google search for the email address used — permanent101@yahoo.com, brings up the name Mark/Marc Levy. I responded: “Dear Bob (/Mark R Levy?) Let’s email first…can you send pictures of the apartment.” He responded: U might be fake how do I know? (+other stuff). I suggested Skyping after he sent me pictures, and also that I was confused as to whether he was in the US or France at the moment (why would he want a US telephone #). He responded again immediately (no French person responds to emails in 5 mins, come on!) asking for my Skype ID. I didn’t respond for another 5 minutes and he sent an email ending with:
“stay alive and well which if we were to meet and find out you r a scam

One word: CLASSY.

I feel like an idiot, but at least I didn’t actually go through with it. She sent me a photocopy of a passport with her name in it, and lots of photos of the apartment. It makes me sick just thinking about it.
Don’t think your are an idiot, too many have fallen for it & still are. You listened to your vibes & pulled back in time, we had those some misgivings but did not to our chagrin & lost more than 2,000 Euros! The rat is still up there regularly even with us flagging him. Why can’t Craiglist computers see these regular scamers using the same photos for each list then block them? Something is wrong there you feel they are not too interested & it seems it is mostly Craiglist this occurs on.

It is a very beautiful place located in a very expensive place, listed with a ridiculus low price. After everything is confirmed, he will ask you to pay the first month rent + damage deposit via a third party call Click and Buy (it is a official business website, but he used its name to fraud). Anw if you pay him, then you are done. you will never see him again neither the apartment and your money.

It is all very well but how does anyone know other than the name given them, along with the e-mail address used what the scammer’s real name is? Obviously they change it, but the one that got us did not until we had flagged him on a couple of sites several times then he went to ground. However for sure he will pop up with the same photos detail etc even the same false but checkable name-Co e address. The name he was using being a US citizen & a CEO no less of a top 500 CO! That genuine person knows about this, however even with their Co security dept they can not get anything done, it is mind blowing! As to wiring money, well until they are asked (we feel for it) for the funds to be sent money gram or western union we were not suspicious but concerned & stupidly did it. Why do these organisations ask for all the ID off the sender, yet nothing off the receiver? Something is amiss here it makes zero sense & nothing is being done about it by those organisations, why? Maybe the drug terrorist banking laws could come into effect as per the banks for these organisations? Fools like us will always be out there sadly, we thought we were old enough not to fall for such a scam…. clearly we were, even signed a lease for the phoney premises, how stupid is that? The money was picked up from a PO in Scotland within 2 hours, with a false name on the doc’s how can this be so? I again wonder he could not have legit ID for that person so how the…. did he do it, pick up the funds I mean? As to Canadian police doing anything, well reckon like the French ones they have too much to do. The latter do not even show any real interest & unless someone can actually get a picture along with concrete details as to real name etc of perportrator what can they do…? Maybe a sting, but na they are not worried & no money in the budget for that sort of sting.
We believe Craiglist could & should do more, their name must be mud out there with all the blogs hammering them? They would have to see these scammers & their computer program could be set to ensnare them then refuse their listing, even seek real detail from the liste, but no.
Craiglist is by far from what you read the worst for this sort of thing yet they are still in biz, what a joke! They are as guilty as the scammer of course would not see it that way.

As I regularly post in the CL room share section: phone numbers starting with +4470… are most likely to be scams (redirects to Nigeria, Benin, etc.).
While some of the scammers change their address, their ways to advertise rooms to rent aren’t very clever: either they make it up with many mistakes (from punctuation to descriptions of areas of Paris) or else they steal parts of, or whole, ads from elsewhere (so Google some sentences of an “interesting” ad before replying).
If however the ad lists a FRENCH phone number to call, it is more likely to not be a scam.
